Some automatic chargers need a battery in the circuit to work properly. When you tested the battery after a overnight charge, was the charger still on? Was the reading exactly 12.00 ? A fully charged battery that has sat for a few hours will show ~ 12.66 , discharged to empty is ~ 11.70 Check battery voltage, attach and turn on the charger, then see if to voltage rises.
