After the seal and dust seal are in the bore, coat the piston with fluid and
place it on the top of the dust seal. Start at one side and expand the seal
around the piston. I have some old rod type spark plug gap tools that are
very small and are bent at 90 degrees at the end. They are also blunt so
they don't cut the seal. You work the seal like you work a tire onto a
wheel. Get one piece on and work the tool around the piston expanding the
seal. I place the piston on top of the dust seal so I am pulling out from
the center of the piston, not up so you don't pull the dust seal from the
bore. Once the seal is around the piston, make sure you have the bleeder
open or completely removed so the air can escape when you push the piston in
the bore. You have to make sure the piston stays square in the bore or it
won't go in. There is very little clearance. You can use a clamp and a
piece of wood on the piston to slowly push it down. I like the plastic
trigger type squeeze clams as they don't put as much pressure on the piston,
just enough to get started. If you use a C clamp, be careful to keep the
piston centered and square. Screw type C clamps can put a lot more force on
the piston and you can screw up the bore and/or piston if you're not
careful.
The other way is to first put the base of the piston in the top of the dust
seal then try to put the seal into the bore, but I can tell you it is very
difficult to install that way.
