Perhaps some did, but my grandfather bought a twine baler about the time I was
born, and as I recall, cow magnets didn't come out until 15 or 20 years later
when ceramic/rare earth magnets were developed. 1950's magnets weren't strong
enough to be effective. In addition to bits of baling wire, cow magnets are
effective against fence wire, nails and so on that the cow might pick up while
grazing.
Domestic cows really are amazingly dumb animals !
AFAIK, the magnets are still in use today; and even still available from Edmund
Scientific !
