The only other successful return of a classic model that I can think
of offhand is the Dodge Charger. Anyone remember the thing they called
the Charger back in the 80's?

Many folks might argue that a four-door sedan, even with the
performance potential it has, doesn't really evoke the spirit of the
original Charger (Bo and Luke and all that). Visually, I think the
"new" Beetle does a much better job (although the mechanical layout
strays more than a bit from the original). Same with the now-not-so-new
and soon-to-go-away Thunderbird. For me, that "works"!

But I saw one of the new Toyota FJ40 (or whatever it's called) Land
Cruisers yesterday; took me about 30 seconds to realize what I'd seen,
and that was mostly because of the use of a blue /white paint scheme
that more or less makes one think of the old ones. The "recognition"
worked ok for me in publicity photos, but it hardly registered at all
on the road. Go figure!

*Mrs Irrelevant: Oh, is it a jet?
*Man: Well, no ... It's not so much of a jet, it's more your, er,
Triumph Herald engine with wings.
