I have read from other listers that, once dried out, the plastic floats can be
patched by melting with a soldering gun like a Weller.

I don't think that is an original TR3 float (my recollection is they
were little metal cans) so that may complicate sourcing a replacement.
Have you considered emptying it out and sealing the hole (epoxy) which
is likely rather small?
