Hi Bill:

If it is your servo, I just had my unit rebuilt by Brake Materials in
Indiana (or is it Ohio). They found the unit full of gas, not brake
fluid. Don't know how that happened. Good job though for $85 rebuild
plus $30 for powder coat. The P/C job was of middling QC (a bit too thin
so low gloss), but then they did it in gold for me at no extra so I
can't really complain at all). They seem to be the replacement for
Partco, which has sold them the tools and business. The guy to contact
is Scott at (260)426-3331. NFI, of course.

Anyway, I've converted to Dot5 (as per my questions to the list over the
week-end). You wouldn't believe how much wrecked up paint I had on the
inner wheel wells, frame, body tub etc... What a mess! It was all nice
clean Imron & black lacquer before that. Now I just had to de-rust the
whole lot and re-paint by hand. Still not like a proper spray job, but
better than rust. It's a pain doing the conversion to silicone, what
with re-building MC, clutch MC/SC etc, but I'd do 3 times as much work
to avoid repeating that horrible paint mess.

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks Dave!

Please please please please let it NOT be a leaky master cyl. I despite
brake fluid above all other things.

Best,

Bill S.

        Congratulations.

                1. I had to do some heavy braking on the way to the
show thanks to
being cut off by an aggressive driver. As I'm breaking,
I all of a
sudden hear the unmistakable sound of hissing air, and
now hear it
whenever any pressure is put on the pedal, and effort
has increased
moderately. So, it looks like I've killed the seals on
the vacuum in
the servo. Here's my question -- how difficult is it to
remove the
                servo and replace it?

Your symptoms are consistent with what I had when mine went bad.
Just an unbolt/bolt process. The hard part is that four of the nuts are
in the footwell. And you have to disconnect the clevis pin on the
pedal. Unbolt the master cylinder and move it forward enough to clear
the studs on the booster and then remove the booster.

On the other hand, check the master cylinder. The most frequent
cause of a failed booster is brake fluid leaking from the master
cylinder into the booster. check the master for leakage and
rebuild/replace if necessary.
