Check the tire maker's rim width recommendation. I spot-checked a few, and 5.5"
seems to be OK.

Check out the "revs per mile" figure for the particular tire you are
considering. This is more accurate (although still not perfect) than guessing
from the advertised size. According to my TR6 handbook, the stock tires were
781.6 (or 782 if you prefer) revs per mile. The Yoko Avid T4 215/70-15 is rated
773 revs per mile, which is very close. If your speedo was perfect before, it
will now read about 1% low, or less than 1 mph @ 70 mph.
