If memory serves, it was concern over the life of the catalytic converter
and/or oxygen sensor. The goal is to make those "lifetime" components
rather than having to change them periodically. Metals like zinc and
phosphorous (the additive in question contains both) can rapidly poison the
catalysts used in the converter and O2 sensor.
