The book is correct. You can get to the bolts on both end of the drive
shaft if the exhaust is removed. It is still a confined work area but no
more confined than any other tight work. There's plenty of room to swing
a wrench. I have done this on jack stands with the exhaust partially
removed, on a lift , with the exhaust out , it's a no brainer. I would
stop by and take a look to see what he is actually doing.
