Is it the shifter mechanism or the gearbox itself? You can determine this by
pulling the cover and moving the shifter. There is a combination of detent
balls in the cover. If these have gotten gummed up and do not move freely it
will inhibit free movement of the shifter and a good cleaning my resolve your
problem.
