Dave,

I used Klean Strip, available at least at Lowes.  Be careful, though; 
that stuff will take the hide off *everything*, so wear long sleeves, 
chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection.  It goes on as a paste, 
so is easy to work with.  On the first piece I used a tooth brush to 
scrub into crevices.  After just a few minutes it felt like a bunch 
of bees were stinging my arms.  Spatter too small to see was the 
culprit.  N o smell though.
