How does it act when it does start, Jack ? Is there any correlation with
weather and so on ?
If you pull the plugs when it won't start, are they wet ?
Does it have anything strange, like a fuel pressure regulator ?
Does it start any easier if you leave the hood up for a few minutes ?
Does a sniff of starting ether help get it going ? Holding the carb pistons
up ?

If you relieve the fuel system pressure, then remove the float lid when it
won't start, does the fuel level in the bowl look normal ? Are the bowls
vented to air or through the emissions control system ?
All I can think of to check at the moment, and you've already done the
things I might try.
I'm assuming that by "hard to start" you mean it's turning at normal
cranking speed and just doesn't light off. If it cranks slow, that's a
different story.
Might be worth checking the primary ignition voltage right at the coil while
doing the hot crank thing.
Is there any chance you've got a "no ballast required" coil combined with an
external ballast ? A 71 TR6 should have an internally ballasted coil, but
there's always the chance that someone has added an external ballast for
some reason.
Just to be sure ... have you rechecked the valve lash ?
