Even fully closed, there is still cooling system pressure applied to the
diaphragm (backwards through the heater core from the outlet), so it might still
leak.

A temporary or even permanent replacement can be had at Home Depot with a little
creativity. The threads into the head are standard pipe threads (although I
don't recall offhand if they're 3/8" or 1/2" pipe). And many Chrysler products
of the 60s and 70s used an in-line, cable operated heater valve with 1/2" hose
barb fittings.
