In addition to the other comments, you might try moving the power connection
to the battery side of the ammeter where the noise is attenuated. The spikes
may be sending the microprocessor in the radio into what is called a
metastabile state. I had a stereo in my TR6 that would work fine for a while
and
suddenly would quit and give a rhythmic thump which I attributed to the
watchdog
circuit. I put up with it for a while and then changed to a different radio
which has worked flawlessly ever since.
