Foolish question Bob ... are you sure the dampers have oil in them and that it's
reasonably thick oil, not 3-in-1 ?

That test is unreliable, IMO.  The spark will be bigger with a bad condensor,
but at least on my cars, I can usually see a small spark even when the condensor
is fine.  My Haynes calls it a "flash" when the condensor is bad.

Seems very unlikely to me.

I can't think of any fault that would cause the condensors to fail open.

Any chance the battery is installed backwards ?  Or you somehow got a positive
ground Pertronix ?

Have you checked the primary resistance of your "12v" coil ?
