Do you have the shift lever cap off? And I remember you mentioned 
removing the three screws to remove the cap. There should be one bolt at 
the back holding the cap on, and a bolt that runs through the cap AND 
the shift lever and holds both in place. Then there are springs and a 
little retainer disc (NLA) that holds the shifter in place.

Check out the diagram from the Moss catalog, maybe you're missing a part 
or two?
