You'd be surprised! What you say is definitely possible. Many years ago I  
was desperate to track down a weird clutch problem on a friend's Spitfire 4. At 
 
the time, I had my 1200 Herald convertible not currently being used but still 
 functional. I was able to unbolt the master, slave and connecting pipe from 
the  Herald without breaking open the line and swap it into the Spitfire. 
Didn't even  have to rebend the pipe!
 
I never tried it on a GT6, but I'd think it would almost be easier since  the 
GT's slave cylinder is much more accessible, being near the top of the  
gearbox.
