I've finally posted a few photos from the road trip I took with my boys
in the TR4. We drove from Denver to South Bend and Pittsburgh and back,
starting June 29th and returning home July 17th.
First, a few thank you's. My overdrive stopped overdriving on the return
trip and Tom Beaver was kind enough to lend his garage for an hour or so
of late evening troubleshooting. Tom is listed in the VTR assistance
directory, and I rung him out of the blue on a Friday evening. I left
knowing I had plenty of fluif in the gearbox, and carrying his spare
solenoid for when I had more troubleshooting time. Tom's a real hero and
the boys and I really enjoyed the Triumph car show that is his garage.
Also thanks to Blake for pulling together the directory, great resource.
Second, after an overnight drive we stopped at lister Kent Schrack's
home in Lawrence, KS, where we enjoyed his and Karen's hospitality and
more overdrive troubleshooting. When we arrived mid-morning, Karen
invited us in from the heat. Ben said "no, we need to look at the TR3."
Their sweet car is proof that restoration dreams can come true. And when
it comes to hospitality, Kansas really is as big as you think. ;)
Third, thanks to Randall and Dave Massey for the online overdrive
troubleshooting advice while I was on the road. Kent and I tightened a
loose lock-out switch, then replaced the solenoid, which did the trick.
But I lost overdrive again mid-Kansas, without the clattering solenoid
this time, so I need to revisit those switches or something.
Triumphspotting:
- no Triumphs spotted on the way to South Bend
- the boys saw an Amphicar at Diamond Lake, MI, from the boat, but I was
running an errand
- a red TVR and a BRG TR3x on I-77 toward Akron, OH (7/9?)
- PVGP at BeaveRun: TR2 (geranium? mimosa? cosmopolitan? orangutang?),
blue TR6
- PVGP show in Shadyside: yellow TR6, medium blue TR6
- yellow TR6 in Grandview Heights, OH near Columbus in front of Stauf's
- too many Triumphs in Tom's garage to name
- red TR3 in Kent's garage
For our car, we had no trouble aside from the loss of overdrive which
limited us to 70-75 mph on the way home and increased the oil
consumption a bit. I picked up a miss at 3000 rpm just as we got into
Denver. I cleaned the air filters and replaced the sediment bowl gasket
that weekend, one of which eliminated the miss.
