I love your photos of the repair.

HOW did you do it?
1) How did you get it apart without buggering it all up.
I have a small metal cutting lathe in my workshop. The vacuum unit is
originally assembled in a press forming the sheet metal domed halve around the
cast halve. I cut away the portion that was formed over the cast part leaving a
raised portion that locates the cast part on re assembly.
2) (not a how) what is the diaphragm made of? Any Ideas on how to replace it?
It appears that it is two layers of reinforced rubber totaling .027 in
thickness. The center is riveted to the actuating rod (spring). I believe this
could be drilled and tapped for a screw if it were necessary to replace the
diaphragm.
3) How did you make the grooves? Does not look too easy.
That took about five minutes on the lathe
4) How did you make the rings? Could you not get the two halves back together
in the factory manner?
Ah, it's good to have tools. I have access to a CNC Turret punch press. Very
accurate, very quick. No, after cutting away the formed section there is no way
without the rings. However, I would have preferred to have a sheet metal collar
I could have squashed back on with a press.
