Many modern cars do come with "unitized" bearings that are pre-lubed. However,
Triumphs do not. So I'd say neither of you is insane, but your mechanic friend
doesn't know much about Triumphs.
As someone already said, if your Triumph wheel bearings appear greasy, you
should wash it off first. Besides being only a preservative, it may have picked
up dust and grit that will shorten the life of the bearings.
