Just to be pedantic, the same thing is true of parallel-wound motors. Only
permanent magnet DC motors "care" about supply polarity.
Series-wound motors are also known as "universal" motors ... they will even run
on AC ! They produce the best starting torque, so they're found in many places
that need good starting torque like Skil saws, drill motors and sewing machines;
almost every AC application that uses brushes.
