Paul, although this won't answer your question exactly, I remember reading
somewhere that TRs were not known for their fit and finish. ISTR that
whatever source I was reading used the less-than-perfect gaps of the body
panels as the example. Being a relatively inexpense sports car, they were
run through the assembly line fairly quickly.
I went out this morning and measured the door gaps on my '56 TR3. Both
lower horizontal gaps were very tight - probably no more than .20" to .10"
to virtually no gap at the back of the passenger side. This is opposed to a
front vertical gap of .45" at the widest spot. The rear vertical gap was
.30" at it's widest. Bear in mind that my car has been hit and repaired a
few times. My car is freshly painted and the body shop probably spent some
time getting the gaps to line up as close as they could. Also, this is an
early TR3 so the body toolings may be much different for a later 3A.
