My 58 TR3A has similar behavior. When the radiator is full to the bottom
of the fill cap and I drive the car it blows coolant out of the overflow
tube until is a couple quarts down. After that it no longer leaks but
continues to run fine with water temperature about 150 degrees F. I
replaced radiator cap and replaced thermostat using the heavy brass
sleeved type and the overflow was unchanged. No leaks from the radiator
or hoses. The only time it blows coolant is when I top off the coolant
level before starting to drive. I have simply ignored it since the car
runs fine at normal temperature with the lower coolant level and I
figure the car knows how much coolant it wants.
