The shape of the shift ring teeth and the gear hub teeth keep the trans
engaged in gear. The springs in the shifter cover just keep the linkage from
falling out of gear during overrun.
Take a close look at a the inside of the shifter ring, the teeth will have a
taper towards the center. The gear hub also has a matching taper. When the
two are engaged and torque applied to the shaft, the ring and hub are drawn
tight by the taper.
