shock interchangeability

Maybe a autoparts-helper(?)-kid could answer me this, but I get tired of them
asking me, "ahh... first tell me who makes the Triumph?" (as their hands hover
over a computer keyboard)... MAKES ME WANT TO SCREAM!

I have a pair of fairly unused Armstrong shocks from another foriegn car that
seemingly would fit on my Triumph TR3, their about the same stiffness too, why
shouldn't I use them?
