Fred,
Our city Fire Department has recently made a similar proposal... to charge
for emergency service calls. Don't we already pay taxes for that??? The
proponents of this plan try to explain that only those with insurance will
be charged the fee (huh?), and that the charge will go directly to the
insurance company and not the individual. What??? Are they actually naive
enough to think that the insurance companies won't pass that charge on
directly to the individuals (in the form of increased rates), or are they
thinking the citizens are too stupid to figure that out??? It's ridiculous.
And while we're on the subject of taxes...
How in the world were we able to get by with a 3% sales tax (in my area) 30
years ago and now we're having trouble getting by with sales tax rates of at
least 6%? I'm sure other areas have experienced similar increases.
Obviously expenses have increased in the last 30 years, but a doubling of
the percentage of sales tax would indicate that they (the expenses) have
grown at a rate of double the increase in sales revenue! Why???
Sorry for the rant... It's just the more money I have to pay in sales tax
(or any tax), the less I can spend on my TR4. <--- LBC content ;)
