I could wiggle my shafts (about 0.012 as close as I could measure with a
dial caliper). I took my carbs to a friends house to drive the little pin
that holds the throttle stops out of the shafts because I didn't have a
small enough punch. We measured the shafts, and yep, the throttle shafts
had grooves in them that were 0.012 deep. He was also able to measure the
inside diameter of the housings, and we found that they were quite close to
stock (0.133 if I remember correct.) It turns out that any dirt that gets
in there tends to imbed into the aluminium and cut the shaft, not the other
way around, so the housing is fine. I just cleaned up everything real well
and put them back together with all the new parts from the kit (less the
throttle shaft bushing and all the others that don't apply.)

As for a shop, I think any machine shop could help you out on it. I suppose
it would be best to find someone who has worked on SU before, but it is a
matter of setting up in a vertical mill and boaring out both side so they
are in line and the correct diameter.

Molybedium Disulfide - the same stuff they add into Moly grease. It is a
solid lubricant that is used also in aerospace and a lot of other places. I
have used it for years in very old transmissions and rear ends that use gear
oil (It's about the only "additive" that I will use for anything.....) The
stuff comes in a 3 oz. tube mixed with oil, and is usually added 1 tube per
transmission or rearend. Dow Corning used to make the stuff, I don't really
know where to find it now, except try some of the racing shops, VW
specialists, or other off-the-wall places - they may know about it. The big
stores don't know anything about it. It will be called "Moly Lube" or
"MOS2" or some such. The stuff is black and nasty - get it on your fingers,
and it doesn't come off - like graphite, but much finer and more black.

I have some early literature on it, and it was used in big slow gear boxes
like when you draw steel through a die. The slow gears allowed the oil to
squeeze out between the teeth, thereby letting the metal teeth touch. The
MOS2 forms a solid film that will not displace. They sampled the oil for
metal content in their tests and found that after adding 3% MOS2, the amount
of metal being put into the oil dropped way down to almost nothing. I had a
friend with a VW bug with about 200,000 miles on the tranny and it was
getting noisy. He put two tubes in and the last I heard he had another
50,000 miles on it and it was quiet again.

In fact, I need to find a source of it myself, as the VW shop I used to get
it at went out of business. Hmmmmm - guess I had better start looking
around.

I have some interesting pictures of the old parts. I'm going to write an
article for our local British car club (sometime when I get time.......)

Good luck
Frank
