I've never discovered a really elegant way to remove an old seal, I've
typically just pryed them out with a screwdriver.  That tears them up
pretty bad but they are destined for the rubbish anyway.  There are some
special seal puller tools out there but I have yet to invest in one.

But the real reason for my post is that if you are going to all the trouble
of replacing the seal consider installing a Speedi Sleeve (R) on the pinion
flange.  This will give your new seal a smooth, clean surface against which
to seal.  Take your flange to your local bearing house and ask for a Speedi
Sleeve (R) to fit.
