One way to get rid of air - when you are replacing hoses / radiator / 
thermostat,
press the thermostat open, you'll have to compress the spring, and prop it open 
with an aspirin or two. This will allow air to vent out and after it's full and 
up to temp, the aspirin will dissolve and won't hurt anything.

Filling the system today I had massive problems - the rad wasn't heating
evenly and I could only get about 4 liters of coolant in (70/30 mix).
After tearing my hair out a friend suggested it is likely a massive air
lock.
