to be suspicious of this transaction, but he wants to know my bank
information beforehand, to verify that the funds exist. I've never had
anyone ask me for this before ... I was thinking of faxing him a copy of
the cashier's cheque after I get it. Is there any reason not to do
this?

What's it to him? You're paying cash, right? (A cashier's cheque is the
same as cash) If he was floating you a loan that would be a different
matter. If he is afraid of a fraudulant cashier's cheque then there should
be other vehicles of funds transfer. Like cash.
