seems like I am missing something here (again). If I install an electric
pump
then I would like to keep the original in place to look right.

Ideas and suggestions on what to look for next always welcome.

It sounds like it isn't the pump. It could be a blockage in the steel
lines from the tank. Drian the tank and take the line loose at the both
ends and blow compressed air through to see if it is clear. Also try to
inspect the inside the tank visually with a flashlight for rust flacking.

I had a similar situation and it turned out to be the Dpo (and the D stands
for D***ed) sealed the fuel sender with RTV instead of investing $2 in a
new gasket and the RTV oozed into the tank and small globs found their way
into the line and pump. The first time I back flused the lines with
compressed air and pushed it back into the tank. The next time I took the
line off of the tank and blew it onto the garage floor. No problems since.

Good luck

Dave
