I understand that in days gone by horsemen/footsoldiers rode/walked on the left of a track/roadway so that their sword hand was instantly available to attack a potential enemy approaching from the other direction. The story goes that the French changed all this as Napoleon Bonapart was lefthanded. He commanded his troops to march on the right side of the road. With the invention of the horseless carriage, vehicles continued to use the left under British influence or right under French influence in what ever part of the world they were at the time.
