Hi Everyone.
A couple of days ago I asked for info on rebuilding an angle drive.
Turns out I didn't need to rebuild it.
I had jumped to some conclusions, that fortunately I checked out before
I tore the car apart.
To recap: My speedometer quite working quite abruptly the way it had
when my speedometer cable broke twice in the last 2 years. So I assumed
it was the cable.
Well, I pulled the speedometer out of the housing and it was unbroken.
So I assumed the problem was the other notorious week link the angle
drive. I just got started taking the interior out when I decided I
better check to see if the cable was turning before I went any further.
I took the car for a short drive with my finger pressed against the
cable and could feel it turning.
Next I pulled out the speedometer and stuck the cable into it. It
turned easily and I could get it up to 10 - 15 mph by spinning the cable
in my fingers.
I was confused - The cable was not broken. The angle drive was not
broken. The speedometer was not working. Then I pulled out the new
cable that I had purchased and noticed there is a collar fixed to the
speedometer end of the cable to make sure enough of it is sticking out
to engage the speedometer. The collar on the old cable was no longer
fixed to the cable, so the cable was able to back out of the speedometer .
I took the inner cable out of the new cable and inserted into the cable
in the car and now everything works.
Thanks,
Roger Elliott
