Everyone...
My ignition seems to be self-advancing. I'll have it timed perfectly, then
after a couple of days it will start pinging a little, so I'll retard it
slightly with the adjusting nut on the distributor. After doing this a
couple of times (and remembering on one of these occasions that I had
adjusted it to the middle big mark on the vacuum advance unit scale), I
realized that the nut is rotating (through vibration?) in the advance
direction. What exactly is supposed to prevent this?
I looked in my spare parts catalog, and it shows a small piece that looks
like some sort of retainer clip that I assume is supposed to go outside the
adjusting nut, but it's not labeled. The Moss catalog shows it as well, but
it's not labeled there either. My distributor does not have this piece
(which I'm now certain is the problem). What exactly is it?
The thing can go a couple of hundred miles without changing, then move 2 or
3 tick marks during a 20 minute drive (always in the advance direction).
