Did anyone catch "Fifth Gear" on Speed Channel last night? The show is a
wholly irreverent British Auto show. Last night they took the opportunity to
trash the MGF and noted the slight improvements in its successor, the MGTF. I
caught the show last fall while in London when they trashed the BMW Z4. Of
course, they do praise some cars, but they can really tear into a car, much
more so than US car programs, and they are very funny. They also did a piece
on Racetorations and their work on TRs and, imparticular, a modified TR5
Rasetorations did. The cost of the restoration and speed modifications was
35,000 British Pounds($63,000 US)! The result was a car whose performance and
handling they were very positive about when compared to modern sports cars. In
the end, they concluded that without power steering and ABS brakes etc. it was
also a lot more work to drive as compared to modern sports cars.(If you own a
TR you can't be afraid of work!) Catch the program if you can, they'll have
you laughing out loud.
