Ed,
Moss and TRF have sales on good quality piston/liner sets (rings and figure
8 seals are included), which I'd advise if you're going to rebuild your
engine. Maybe you can find a machine shop that will bore and hone your
sleeves, but cost out whether it's cheaper. The good brands TRF and Moss
carry are AE Hepolite and Mahle. List consensus is that these are pretty
similar, but decidedly better engineered with matched tolerances than the
cheapies on e-bay.
In terms of bearings, there has been varying discussion on the List about
them. When in doubt about the quality of any item, I went to Ken Gilanders
at British Frame and Engine because he doesn't sell anything he hasn't had
good experience with over something like 30 years or more. The bonus is
that he's always willing to chat you through a problem and e-mails you
promptly. Ken can also get your cam reground to stock or to hot. I went
stock because it'll last a little longer, he said.
Rocker Arm Specialists do a great job on rebuilding rocker arms, costing
only about $100.
Think about hardening your valve seats for unleaded gas while you're at it.
Some on the List don't think it's necessary, but it never pays to look short
term when you're building a house or a car.
