As someone has already suggested, try loading the Google toolbar. If using
Internet Explorer you will need revision 5.5 or better for popup protection.
I would also suggest downloading SpyBot 1.3 at
http://download.com.com/3000-8022-10122137.html
Run in advanced mode and immunize. You'll be surprised at the difference in
performance if you run the scan regularly.
