The problem with this method is propane can enter the distributor cap and
go
boom.

Which is shy you leave the tip on. The tip will mix the propane with the
right amount of air. As long as you don't poke it right at the
distributor, by the time the propane finds its way over there the mix will
be diluted enough with air so as to be below the LEL (lower explosion
limit) and will not support combustion. But when you hold the tip very
close to the vacuum leak the air leaking in will be replaced with a more
burnable air/propane mix and a quick rise in RPM will be noted. The other
nice thing is the RPM's will quickly drop as soon as you move away from
the leak. Spraying flamable liquids (starter fluid, carb cleaner) will
leave a small puddle of liquid and you will have to wait for the residue to
boil off and disipate before the RPM's drop.
