retainer?  They don't have the typical rivet shank on them that pulls
into the gun and then snaps off - instead, they have a hollow sleeve
where you would think the shank would go. >

Yes.  You strike the hollow end with a mandrel to expand it and flatten it
out. Not easy when in the car - what engineer thought of that?
That's why an alternate is offered:  a clevis pin and a cotter pin of proper
dimension.
