Sorry, I don't recall ever seeing anything I'd describe as a "hunk of
rubber" at the back of the transmission.
Some TR4s were fitted with a metal weight that clamped to the OD tail
housing ... this was supposedly done to try to eliminate a resonance that
caused the gear shift lever to buzz annoyingly at certain road speeds. I
always figured that buzz was to warn you not to drive with your hand on the
lever ... but I guess some people objected <g>
Some transmissions were fitted with a strap from the shifter extension to
the rear mount, for the same reason.
