When you say "red and white wires" do you mean a bunch of red wires and a
bunch of white wires or do you mean a bunch of wires that are red and
white?  The latter are the gauge lighting wires.  Since there are 8 bulbes
that illuminate the gauges (and since you have a 73 there are a couple more
for the switch plinth lighting) and all these wires need to get connected
together, a big splice makes the most sense.
