I lived in Savannah, actually I lived on Wilmington Island and worked in
Savannah for 5 years and the "sand gnats", as they call them there are
very bad in the spring and fall every year. The closer to the marshes
you are the worse they get. If the event is held in October, chances are
they'll be out in mass. Mid September should be OK, depending on the
weather.

I was born in New Orleans, and grew up on the Miss. Coast, both of which
have the no-see-ums, but NEVER have I experienced bugs like that. As
best as I can tell, someone must have ticked off the Prince of Darkness
and he sick'd a plague on us. The slightly earlier time frame of the
next convention coupled with everyone pledging not to tick off the
Prince should ward off any future attacks.
