On vintage race TR's, we must install a larger or more efficient radiator
to keep them cool. Stock radiators almost never do the job. When we do
this, we oftentimes then have to put in a thermostat to get the engine warm
enough. At that point, some of us drill out the hole in the water pump
housing, tap it, screw in a soft plug, and drill a 5/16" hole in it.
By the way, owners of newly built vintage racers (myself included, several
years ago) go through the usual litany of better ducts, orifices rather
than thermostats, water wetter, blah blah and find that none of these
things keeps the temps below 200. The electric fan comes closest to solving
the problem at idle but certainly not at high rpms on hot days. The bigger
radiator really does the job, though.
