As something of a specialist in "getting them back on the road PDQ", I would
strongly recommend the latter course. Pulling the head is not that hard,
especially for someone with as much experience as you have, and IMO greatly
increases the chances of overall success. It's very important the hole be
drilled vertically, on the correct center, and full depth without going too
far. Trying to do that with the head still in the car is a recipe for much
more trouble ...
