GlacierThanks to all that responded to my recent gearbox query. I followed
some of the advice and in the process I also pulled out the gearbox to have
a look. What I found is even more curious, with the gearbox sitting on the
ground I tested if the input and output shaft still appeared locked together
in neutral. It undoubtedly was so I proceed to take the top cover off to see
if anything was up. All looked fine but I really couldn't tell much. Next I
took the bellhousing off and all of a sudden I noticed that it freed up the
input and output shaft!! If I held the input shaft with my hand I could
easily move the output shaft with my other. There is nothing connected to
the bellhousing except that the shift rail protudes into a hole in it. Maybe
that's binding, recall that my first gear did not used to engage, it seemed
to just sit at the edge of the gear and grind softly. The reverse seemed
heavy and while reversing if I pressed the clutch the car would come to a
halt. Second, third and fourth seemed to work. BTW. the clutch seemed okay
even with the wimpy torque that Dan and I had noticed while tightening the
harmonic balancer bolt. I am quite surprised but happy, the new clutch is
however still going in.
Any more ideas from the experts?
Happy Thanksgiving and peace and dignity for the world
