I've used a 220 VAC buzz box stick welder on the other end of : 20 A breaker
, 75 ft of 12G wire then 60 ft of 8 G extension. This was buring a 1/8" rod
welding welding 3/16 steel. Popped the breaker only if the rod stuck for a
extended period of time or the amps were turned up past 90 so.
40 A service should be enough.
