Thanks, Carl for the great explanation. I discovered several things
yesterday:
The thermostat in my TR4 was an ordinary one.
The pile of spares I got with the car contained a brand-new ordinary one and
an original sleeved one.
The saucepan test showed the both worked well and at the same temps.
It did not take a rocket scientist to figure out my next move: Put the
sleeved one in the car!
I spent the day installing in the Triumph a new radiator (really an original
radiator off Ebay for 32 bucks, professionally cleaned and painted for about
twice that) and a switch-controlled electric fan.
Now we think we can finally drive slowly enough to hang out with the
street-rod
cruisers.
We drove the Triumph to dinner at Billabong with the britcar folks. Seems
the anti-overheating regimen is working.
