Hey Bill:

      Don't use any kind of abrasive on the engine (especially sand)  it will 
find its way into cracks and crevasses where it will generate rust over time. 
 If your engine is dis-assembled, I recommend you get it dipped at a machine 
shop cost is about 45 bucks and well worth it.
