Having come down with a bit of shipwright's disease (muffler needs replacing
which means I can properly seal the joint to the header which means the
header should come off for painting, and since that disturbs the manifold
gasket, the carb needs to come off, and I could rebuild it since the idle
kept moving around last year as if I had air leaks somewhere ;-), I am now
at the point of "Reversing the Disassembly".
First question: how much play in the spindle bushings is too much? The old
spindle has only a slight ridge (guess 0.005 inches with my thumbnail). The
new one with the original bushings in the carb body has about 0.015 inch
play by eye (I will take it to work and measure better tomorrow). The SU
instructions give no limits.
Also should the spindle be dry in the bushings or greased? I don't want to
rot the little rubber seals.
Thanks for all advice.
Jeff
