Chris, congratulations on your acquisition. Most wives try selling off
these things.
The center switch cluster is connected to the main harnes by three
multi-pin connectors found under the removable panel in the top center of
the dash. Just lift up and it pulls out. The main culprit is
dirty/corroded contacts and sometimes all it takes is to unplug these and
replug them. Have a quick look at the the contacts whilst you have them
apart.
The dash is connected by two multi-pin connectors and a couple of single
wires. Same story there. Unplug them and plug them back in.
How do you know your alternator does not work? Have you measured the
battery voltage with the engine off and running and noticed no difference?
The battery at rest (when fully charged) will measure about 13.25 volts.
When the engine is started and run at 2000 RPM the voltage should be closer
to 14.25 volts. If the alternator is not working it will likely be less
than the previous reading.
Most electrical problems on old cars are due to poor connections. So
carefully check out the wire harness and especially the connectors.
Good luck
